Re: United team selection could negatively affect our CL chances
IMO it was pretty much down to the legacy of catastrophic recruitment policy with multiple managers under GSB ( not really incl Moyes first time although he did contribute with Hugill) and the years before Moyes rocked up 2nd time around.

That led to a situation where we had an inadequate squad to start last season and to capitalise on the improvements that Moyes and the coaching team ( I think Nolan's influence aprticularly is perhaps greater than some think).

So with the fitness, organisation and tactics etc. we got into the top 4 discussion due to probably the best season for injuries I can recall in last 30 years. It finally caught up in the month of March and while we held on for a bit the absence of Rice and Ogbonna, huge influences in our team, impacted and sees us losing 3 out of 4 and out of the CL race pretty much.

In short, GSB stewardship and in particular Sullivan's narcissism which resulted in him being Head of Recruitment and Transfer policy, scouting etc.. over 10 years ultimately underminded the 11th season.

Let's just play 40 games a season and secure mid table mediocrity every year.

Some helmets on here are okay with that. They're the pimps perfect customers.

Big difference between us and Leicester is they are apparently well run by owners who know what they're doing and are genuinely ambitious.

Well, I was talking about the CL, not the Europa, but anyway, if you're worried about having to play 6 extra games a season you might as well hope we go out in the first round in the domestic cups as well. Let's just play 40 games a season and secure mid table mediocrity every year.

Re: United team selection could negatively affect our CL chances
Nagel, but Leicester has a good enough squad to win the PL, whether by luck or invention. Us, struggling to hold onto any Euro place at all.
Champions league group stage, which if we are being honest is where it will end, 15 million euros, 3 million for a win, 1 million for a draw. Lets say 25 million. Useful, but hardly transformative. Pay any squad bonuses for having qualified, lets say five incoming plus wages, top up.some existing players for parity and you don't have much left.
Yes Leicester have done well, but there are more examples of others where Europe has not moved the dial of success. Us, Burnley, Everton, Southampton, Hull City... in fact the UEFA league is almost the kiss of death.

Re: United team selection could negatively affect our CL chances
ParadiseLost, I think you only need to look at Leicester to see what can happen with a one season wonder. The following year they made £73m from Champions League prize money alone, and made a total profit of £92.5m that season. They might not have qualified for Europe again until now but they are a solid top half club now instead of a yoyo one like before.

And before you say that their owners are richer and spend more than ours, Leicester's net spend from 2015-2020 was £125m. West Ham's was £187m.

Give the same amount of fucks as everyone else but in the context of public safety and Covid 19.

If you are going to move it anyway why wouldn't you just move it to the Country that both teams are from to minimise travel and quarantine issues?

Fuck all to do with Man Utd team selection. No such team as United.

Re: United team selection could negatively affect our CL chances
After we beat Leicester a few weeks ago we were only 1pt behind them, now we are 8pts behind.
Injuries and mistakes derailed CL qualification.
Hopefully the key players are back now
and we can regroup and get at least 7pts from the last 3 games and secure Europa.

Re: United team selection could negatively affect our CL chances
Nagel, would qualifying for the CL have improved our bank balance? I think we would likely have had to spend a lot more in transfer fees and wages to even just compete, let along progress in the CL. And those wages, for a one year campaign would still be with us in later years.
Its been a good season but it might have come to early. Plenty of other clubs have had one season wonders, gone into Europe and then gone backwards. Even our own forays into Europe in recent years have been unmitigated disasters that did nothing to take us forward as a club.
We may still get some European football next year but we hardly have enough strength in depth to get through a season in the PL, as we are now proving.
Moyes can give us incremental progress each year but lets remember that no team succeeds long term these days without a owner with pots of money.

Nagel 3:52 Fri May 14
Re: United team selection could negatively affect our CL chances
Having a record breaking season means fuck all, especially when that season is an anomaly due to lockdown. The opportunity was there to qualify for CL and thus help build our profile and bank balance and strengthen the team squad for future seasons. Not qualifying for Europe at all would be a pathetic end to the campaign.

Who gives a toss about breaking records? They're on par with the world's record for stuffing marshmallows up one single nostril.

If we miss out on Europe it will absolutely be a massive disappointment, no matter how much the happy clappers dress it up. Thankfully, we won't.

Fact of the matter is, United belittled the PL by playing their kids.

Dock points, the cunts.

I think there will be a few twists and turns still.
It’s an odd season with lots of strange results.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool miss fire on Sunday.
Although I’ll be happy with a top half finish, I ‘d also feel we blow a good opportunity this season for Champions league football.

I guess at least the teams we have left to play have nothing to play for.

Bollocks to that, Brenty. We'll be back to full strength and will win our last three games. It probably won't be enough to make CL but certainly Europe.

Re: United team selection could negatively affect our CL chances
End of the day our destiny was in our own hands and we blew it, again. Same as 2016 when we were in a similar position. We are probably the most out of form side now in the top 6 and could well well finish out of the European places altogether which would be a total failure.
